What is FSVP?
The Foreign Supplier Verification Program (FSVP) is an FDA requirement designed to ensure that imported foods importer into the U.S. meet the same safety standards as food produced in the United States. Under FSVP, U.S. importers are responsible for verifying that their foreign suppliers are producing food in compliance with FDA food safety regulations. Foreign suppliers, for example, must have a hazard analysis, preventive controls, and applicable produce safety standards. In short, FSVP shifts accountability to the importer to actively manage and document food safety compliance for imported products.
Because FSVP can be complex and highly dependent on the product, supplier, and country of origin, this blog series will break the program down into clear, practical steps.
