What is a DUNS number?

Dun and Bradstreet Company Number

A DUNS number (Data Universal Numbering System) is a unique nine-digit identifier. With this number, government officials track and validate business entities in a standardized way. Issued by Dun & Bradstreet (D&B) for businesses around the world, business with a DUNS number can more effectively:

  • Seek financing from a bank or other lending institution

  • Request credit from a business associate or partner

  • Register as a vendor or supplier with a company

  • Compete for contract opportunities at the local or international level

DUNS, FSVP and FDA compliance

A DUNS number and FSVP

For companies involved in importing food into the United States, a DUNS number is an essential part of complying with the Foreign Supplier Verification Program (FSVP). As part of the FSVP, FDA requires that importers provide a valid number when submitting entry filings through U.S. Customs. This number serves to identify the FSVP importer at the time of entry.  The number must be included in each shipment’s entry documentation. It helps FDA track who is responsible for ensuring that the imported food meets all applicable safety requirements.

The DUNS number must correspond to the entity listed as the FSVP importer and will be used by FDA to contact the responsible party if follow-up or inspections are needed.

Using Ken Lehat’s DUNs number

Foreign importers must have a US based FSVP agent. In addition to helping you comply with all FSVP regulation, we can also serve as your US FSVP agent.  We can provide you with our DUNS code number.  When serving as your FSVP agent, we implement all the steps required to comply with FDA.  We guide you through each FSVP regulatory step to ensure compliance.
